The video BUGZ will be used to introduce a unit on arachnids and insects in a third grade classroom. The class consists of eight and nine-year-old students of low to above average achievement. There are two students in the class who have been identified as learning disabled.

To identify at least half of the names of arachnids or insects.
To describe shape, color, texture, and defense mechanisms of arachnids or insect shown on video.

Paper, pens, pencils, and colored pencils.
Procedures
Springboard
Bring in bugs for them to look at.
Talk about what the students know about bugs.

Design an insect or arachnid using characteristics from the bugs on the video.
Make a class chart listing as many arachnids and insects as can be recalled from the video.
Go outside to imitate bug movements. Have students role-play. Relay games.
Closure
Share drawings and discuss the upcoming creative writing project on bugs.
Review what we learned about arachnids and insects.
Assessment
Class Discussion and chart will reveal student knowledge of arachnids and insects in video.
Completion of drawing.
